Today we are featuring our Live Tibetan Khata Scarf for the next giveaway in our Climb the Mountain to Clean Water campaign. A khata, is a traditional ceremonial scarf which symbolizes purity and compassion and the pure heart of the giver. Tibetans commonly give a kind acknowledgment of good luck at the time of presenting. Jake Norton of Challenge21 will spend the day acclimating before heading to the summit tonight and embarking on his climb of El Pico de Orizaba. We’ll be thinking of him over the next few days and sending many thoughts of good luck his way.

Khatas can also be presented at festive occasions to a host or departure of guests and at Tibetan weddings, guests offer khatas to the bride and groom. The Dalai Lama is known to offer khatas as a gift which symbolizes purity of intention and the beginning of the relationship.

A portion of proceeds from our Khata Scarves is always donated to the Challenge21 campaign and Water for People, helping to bring clean water and sanitation to countries worldwide.

This week we are giving away a Protection Cord Necklace and Silk Khata Scarf from our Live Tibetan line. Protection cords are worn to bring you good luck and protection throughout the journeys and adventures in life. Our Tibetan Buddhist protection cords are sourced from Nepal and have been blessed by a Tibetan Buddhist lama. By tradition, mountain climbers receive one before any major expedition in the Himalayas.

Jake Norton of Challenge21 has been wearing protection cords since 1996 and is currently donning three of them. In preparation for his trip, we wanted to give Jake all of the luck and protection that we could. The photo below shows Jake and his wife Wende proudly sporting their newest protection cords with Live Worldly’s Kael Robinson.

Having spent the day acclimating at the base of La Malinche, Jake is scheduled to begin his climb of Pico de Orizaba, the third largest peak in North America, tomorrow. Our first featured product is the Live Tibetan Prayer Bead Necklace. Prayer Beads, also known as Mala Beads, are a sign of world peace and are meant to bring luck and protection to those who wear them. Prayer Beads are used for reciting Buddhist mantra and in many other cultures to center focus for prayer and meditation. Why We Are Proud To Be A Partner Of Challenge21

I once heard that there are seven different things you should do to reach happiness in life. Two of them I remember like the back of my hand, almost like when you hear something and actually feel the emotions that come with what is being spoken. The first is to do one thing everyday that scares you, and the other is to give to others that are less fortunate than you.

To “do one thing every day that scares you or is different” is the exact reason that we chose to partner with Challenge21. Challenge21 is embracing that exact notion –  to do something that scares you or is different than your normal routine.  Jake Norton’s goal to climb the three highest peaks in all seven continents to raise $2.1 million for clean water is something that no one has ever accomplished. It is one of the hardest tasks to complete as a mountaineer. He does not know what is going to happen on any of these climbs, or what the weather will be like but he does it anyway because it is something new and extreme and scary. It is something that makes him happy.

To “give to others” less fortunate than you is something that sounds very easy to do. However, I have found that the idea to give to others is not as easy as it seems. To give to someone else you have to have many other qualities that come with giving. You have to be compassionate, loving, caring, cultured, and strong. Giving is something that we as Live Worldly have made a goal. We want to put ourselves in the shoes of the people that we are working with and help to address their most pressing needs. Challenge21 has a similar goal in trying to raise awareness and funds to address the world’s most alarming issues – clean water and sanitation.

My journey with Challenge 21 started 13 years ago on an outward bound trip when I met our trip leader, Wende Valentine (now Jake’s wife). At a young age she taught me the value of experiencing other cultures and finding my true passions. This was the beginning of my love for traveling and connecting with others around the world. Wende has been in a leading role at Water for People for nearly 10 years and has teamed up with Jake to create and build Challenge21 into what it is today. We are thrilled to be able to work with Jake, Wende, Challenge21, and Water For People on this campaign and to help climb the mountain to clean water.

Climb The Mountain to Clean Water with Live Worldly and Challenge21

Love, live, and give with Live Worldly this February as we launch our Climbing the Mountain to Clean Water Campaign with partners Challenge21 and Water For People. It’s an unseasonably warm day in February so you and a few friends decide to go on a hike. As you reach the top, you look out at the incredible view around you and treat yourself to a long drink of water. Sounds perfect right? Unfortunately, not everyone has the luxury of clean drinking water. In fact, 884 million people, or roughly one in eight people throughout the world do not have access to safe drinking and bathing water. That’s not a molehill of a problem, it’s a mountain.

Challenge21 co-founder and renowned climber, Jake Norton, is aiming to be the first climber to complete the Triple Seven Summits – the three highest peaks on each continent – to help combat the world’s most pressing development needs: water and sanitation. His goal is to raise $2.1 million for the Denver-based non-profit Water For People and engage and impassion 2.1 million people in the global water and sanitation crisis. Having already climbed six of the Challenge21 peaks – Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Everest, Cerro Aconcagua, Mount McKinley, Mount Stanley and Vinson Massif- Jake is preparing for his next endeavor this February: El Pico de Orizaba, Mexico, the third highest peak in North America. Our next post will talk all about the beginnings of Challenge21 and how we got teamed up with this amazing organization.

Climb the Mountain to Clean Water – How You Can Get Involved

Jake and his team will acclimate first on La Malinche, climbing some 4100 feet to the summit, before heading off to Orizaba to climb another 4400 feet, for a total of roughly 8500 feet of climbing over 4 days.
